Information on Choosing a Mosquito Net
The majority of mosquito nets fall into one of four basic designs - box/rectangular, bell, wedge and dome/pop-up. In general terms, the first two types - box and bell shapes - are designed for permanent or semi-permanent indoor use, while the other two designs are more suited for travel.
Box and Rectangular Nets
Spacious and comfortable with the largest enclosed volume of any net style. This allows greater air circulation and hence is cooler. Requires multiple points of support and is usually attached to a purpose built frame. Also the heaviest due to a large amount of fabric. Most suited to indoor use in a permanent location eg long term accomodation, hotel, hospital, etc.
Bell Nets
Only slightly less volume than a box net (because these are generally higher) and can be hung from a single support point. Makes use of a spreader to push the net out and give greater enclosed space. Fairly heavy, but easier to erect. Also suitable for irregular bed sizes. Ideal for both permanent and temporary locations but usually indoors.
Wedge Nets
Very easy to put up as it typically only requires between one and three support points. Space-efficient making it small and light carry. Reduced volume means it can be hotter than bigger nets. Best suited to use in temporary overnight accomodation and tented camps or by people moving from location to location.
Dome and Pop-up Nets
The smallest of the nets. Extremely versatile, light, easy to erect and pack away. No need for any supports and able to be used in windy conditions. They are completely self contained and can be used on beds or on the ground, indoors or out. Small volume so little air movement. Best suited to travellers where low weight and versatility are essential.
Mesh Size
Different nettings have different hole sizes. The size of the holes determines what size of insects are kept out and airflow and hence the temperature that the inside of the net reaches.
Hole size is a compromise between comfort and blocking insects. The larger the holes, the more breathable the net, thus the more comfortable, but larger holes mean that more insects can get through and bite you.
Smaller holes, while preventing almost all insects from penetrating to biting level, prevent air recycling, and are therefore much more clammy and hot to sleep in.
Insecticide Treatment
Most mosquito nets are treated with Permethrin to help enhance their protective qualities. Permethrin is a naturally found insecticide with an excellent safety record and has been used for decades.
Permethrin treatment is recommended by the World Health Organisation and has three key benefits:
- it reduces the number of insects within a room (and hence risk of bites and disease)
- it deters insects from biting through the netting
- it helps protect damaged or poorly erected nets
Each treatment lasts approximately 6 months depending on net storage and use, and, using a suitable re-treatment kit, you can ensure your Mosquito Net is always protecting you.
